Design Probes for Handheld and Ubiquitous Computing
نویسنده
چکیده
In developing electronic gadgets, meters and oscilloscopes are used to probe into their workings, so that engineers can understand how they are behaving and how they can be improved. Analogously, this paper suggests a variety of conceptual probes that can be used to explore the process of design. The probes focus designers’ attention onto successfully managing complexity and in coping with socio-economic influences on design practice in the real world.

ubiquitous, user, interface, web, handheld, wireless The Cooltown project at HP Labs applies Web technology to develop systems that support the users of wireless, handheld devices interacting with their environment, anywhere they may be. The basic elements of Web technology useful for ubiquitous computing are described in several papers and on-line resources from the Cooltown project [1-5]. Her...
متن کاملmCube - Towards a Versatile Gesture Input Device for Ubiquitous Computing Environments
We propose a novel versatile gesture input device called the mCube to support both desktop and hand-held interactions in ubiquitous computing environments. It allows for desktop interactions by moving the device on a planar surface, like a computer mouse. By lifting the device from the surface, users can seamlessly continue handheld interactions in the same application. Since mCube is a single ...

Rapid improvements in mobile computing devices and wireless networks promise to provide a foundation for ubiquitous computing. However, comparable advances are needed in the design of mobile computing applications and supporting middleware. Distributed software must be able to adapt to dynamic situations related to several cross-cutting concerns, including quality-of-service, fault-tolerance, e...
